The dissertation examines the factors that contribute to the body image in women of different ethnic backgrounds, namely, white British women and British women of the Pakistani origin. Literature is reviewed on the history and evolution of body image, the psychology of body image, the link between cultural identity and body image, etc. A study is conducted to test whether Muslim women born in the UK regard their body image in terms of Western culture. Primary data is collected via a questionnaire and volunteer survey among women of different ethnic origins aimed to estimate the measurement of their own waist, thighs and hips. Conclusions are made about cultural influences in white British women and British Pakistani women on the self-estimation of their body shape.
