This dissertation aims to examine whether damaged sedimentary rocks can cause manmade earthquakes. The dissertation aims to investigate the extent to which sedimentary rocks are damaged by subsea oil and gas extraction, to examine the nature and development of sedimentary rocks, to explore the relationship between sedimentary rocks and earthquakes and tectonic compression, and to scrutinize the microscopic behaviour of sediments and their relationship to fracture patterns. The review of literature explores oil and gas and the affects they can have on sedimentary rocks. The paper then discusses the methodology used within the study, as well as the research philosophy and approach. The study then critically examines a wide range of topics. The theory relating to the geology of sedimentary rocks in petrology is examined in great detail. The dissertation then introduces and evaluates two case studies, the Graben region of the North Sea (UK Off-shore oil field) and the Off- shore oil field of Kashagan in Kazakhstan. Conclusions are made regarding Tierney’s risk assessment.
