The dissertation looks into the history and features of the Cultural Revolution in China during 1966-1976 analysing the roots of the revolutionary movement and discussing the role of the media in disseminating communist propaganda. Channels of propaganda are described including literature, poetry, art, posters, etc. The rise to power of Mao Tse-Tung and the creation of his personality cult is examined looking at the role of metaphorical images and discussing the hypocrisy of the communist ideology that exercised totalitarian control over the means of communication. The policy of Deng Xiaoping who took power after Mao's death is discussed.
