The dissertation investigates the concept of third party logistics (3PL) looking at its features, roots, and functions, and addressing the role of 3PL in modern supply chain and in conditions of the global financial crisis. Literature is reviewed on the 3PL phenomenon defining various types of 3PL, explaining the underpinnings of outsourcing, outlining the benefits and drawbacks of 3PL, etc. A case study is conducted of four 3PL providers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) using primary data collected via interviews with 3PL professionals. Conclusions are made about environmental factors that affect 3PL development, and the skills needed to address these factors.
