The dissertation examines the challenges that can face UK small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) in the process of introducing and sustaining lean thinking supply-chain management (total quality management). The review of literature touches on the concept of total quality management (TQM) and its relation to sustainable innovation, competitive advantage and industrial characteristics of the organisation. Examples of TQM in Japanese automotive companies are analyzed. The methods of the research are based on secondary data. Conclusions are made about the potential of TQM to improve competitive performance of SME in the UK.
