The dissertation examines whether existentialism is consistent with philosophical theory investigating the concept of the absurd within philosophy, and analysing its representation in literature by Sartre and Camus, and in films, i.e. American Beauty, I Heart Huckabees, and Groundhog Day. The aspects of the absurd are identified and traced within the above mentioned novels and films including repetition, time, mortality, contingency, dereliction and alienation. Cinema is argued to be complementing and developing the literature of Sartre and Camus by bringing realism to the absurd.
