This dissertation discusses the effects of the communist witch hunt (McCarthyism) on the Hollywood film industry. The study begins by discussing the cold war and the effects that it had in relation to the beginning of McCarthyism. Communism and the concept of the motion picture is discussed, and the dissertation then goes on to discuss the different names involved with this era. The trials that took place are evaluated, and the paper looks at the influence that Elia Kazan had. The way in which Arthur Miller behaved during his trial is discussed, and the relevance of his play The Crucible is discussed before conclusions are made.
