The dissertation investigates social significance of female images portrayed in the films by Zhang Yimou, a Chinese film director and photographer. Literature is reviewed on the feminist film theory discussing stereotypical female and male images, gender as a social construction, feminist issues in China, etc. Textual analysis of the films is conducted discussing aesthetic approaches to the beauty of the female body as well as cruelty and abnormality in Zhang’s depiction of female characters, and comparing his earlier and later films.
