This dissertation focuses on the causes of the B.P. oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, and aims to identify the consequences the firm faces, as well as the extent to which BP can mitigate these effects for the future. The objectives are to gather background information concerning the B.P oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, including the scale of the disaster, to identify the causes of the leak including the organisations involved, to assess the adequacy of the company’s risk management arrangements in these matters, to identify the consequences faced by BP, including its effect on the shareholders, and its impact on public perception and brand image, and to assess the extent to which BP can mitigate these effects for the future, and recommend policies to avoid future accidents. The review of literature presents an overview of the company and of the oil leak, as well as the causes. The amount the leak cost is assessed, and the study aims to examine the extent to which BP was prepared. The literature review also examines the Four Phase Process of Emergency Management, Dan’s Process of Brand Re-building, and Elwood’s process to mitigate the consequences. This detailed literature review is followed by the methodology, and the findings from the data collection methods used. All of the findings are analysed, and the study concludes with recommendations.
