S/PS/25. Literature review of high risk sports

Participation in high-risk, dangerous or extreme sports has in recent years become an increasingly popular activity (Shoham, Rose & Kahle, 1998). The amount of people participating in such sports has had a steady increase for a number of years and is continuously growing (InfoShop, 2003). Even if the participation is still proportionally not at the same level as other popular sports, it is expected that there will be an increase in the range of ready available scientific literature covering this area. The aim of this review is therefore to examine the currently available literature in the area of risky sports and produce a general, yet comprehensive overview. A number of studies will be focused on and any recurring and relevant themes or patterns will be identified. Any gaps will also be addressed and suggestions for future research areas will be put forward.
