The dissertation looks into the phenomenon of semantic priming where a stimulus word activates other words that belong to its semantic “network”. Linguistic theories related to the research are reviewed including the theories of word association, the ‘spread of activation' theory, etc. A study is conducted using the Edinburgh Associative Thesaurus (EAT) to establish the dominant and the subsidiary meanings of 20 homonyms used as stimulus words in 100 participants. Conclusions are made about the validity of the semantic priming method for the activation of various meanings of homonyms.
