This dissertation studies the incompatibility of individuality with communalism in Utopian Literature. The texts studies are More’s Utopia (1516), Neville’s The Isle of Pines (1688), Morris’ News From Nowhere (1890), and Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), where I examine the implications of a contrived societal structure upon the notion of individuality, as well as the self-sufficiency or otherwise of the societies depicted in these texts.
