The dissertation examines the evolution of the hero concept reviewing theoretical literature on hero types, and analysing 4 childrens novels (Alices Adventures in Wonderland, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, James and the Giant Peach and Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone). Themes of hero and anti-hero behaviour are traced thorough the metaphorical symbols of separation, danger, initiation, adventure, bravery, discovery of friendship, triumph, etc. Conclusions are made about childrens perception of heroism.
