The dissertation investigates the meaning of recycling for sustainable development investigating UK initiatives in creating awareness among consumers with regard to household waste management. The review of literature touches on the current legal framework and recycling initiatives in the EU, the UK and Canada. Recycling practices in the three countries are compared, the UK initiatives of the Climate Change Bill and the Waste Management Pilot for Household Waste are considered discussing whether they can raise consumer awareness of the recycling benefits. The effectiveness of the government waste management programmes is evaluated arguing the need to introduce penalties and incentives to make people deal with waste properly. Qualitative methods of research are employed including secondary research and case studies. Conclusions are made about the approaches to waste management that prove effective for substantive environmental protection.
