The dissertation addresses the reform of the United Nations (UN) Security Council (SC) prompted by the inability of the UN to perform its role in recent international and humanitarian conflicts. The reasons behind the need for reform are examined, the background of the UK Security Council is described, forecasts are made about the future evolution of the UN Security Council, its activities and interventions since the Cold War are reviewed, the major problems in the SC function are identified, the possibility of SC enlargement is considered detailing the position of Japan, Germany, Brazil, India and African representatives as SC candidates. Conclusions are made about the need for SC reform to maintain international peace and security.
