The dissertation examines the legal framework of exercising sovereignty and autonomy for the members of World Trade Organisation. Literature is reivewed on the history and goals of state collaboration within WTO under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The issues of national sovereignty and GATT obligations of the state members are examined in the context of Articles I, II, III and XI of GATT, debate about WTO’s interpretations of Article XX is discussed, its wider political impacts on democratic legitimacy of states are considered.
