This dissertation explores human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir in recent years. The study aims to look at the nature of the United Nations (UN) role in Jammu and Kashmir. The dissertation begins by providing the background to human rights, Jammu, Kashmir, and the reasons why India, Pakistan and China are interested in the regions. The next section focuses on the UN in regards to the protection of human rights and the two regions. The following section focuses on self determination and assesses whether the people of Jammu and Kashmir are entitled to it under international law. Other territories that have had their rights violated are assessed and the actions of the UN in regards to these territories are assessed. The study concludes with a summary of the findings and of the methodological approaches taken.
