This dissertation discusses The United Nations rules regarding the use of force. The study aims to assess whether the rules are adequate enough to protect countries from the unlawful use of force. The dissertation begins by providing the background to the United Nations Charter, the role of the security council and the role of the general assembly. The articles in the charter that relate to force are then analysed, and the study examines topics like armed attacks, force, proportionality, and the protection of nationals. The dissertation discusses other forms of protection against violence, namely customary law and the role of the international court of justice. Iraq and Nicaragua are used as examples of the way in which the charter is in use. Conclusions are made in order to see whether the rules are in fact adequate.
