The dissertation looks at the importance of human capital in short-term and long-term performance of multinational enterprises (MNE) using a case study of HSBC (Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation). The review of literature touches on the history of the company, the use of employee training and development programmes, the challenges of cross-cultural leadership, the features of multicultural teams, leader’s competences needed for multicultural teamwork, Hofstede’s theory of cultural dimensions, etc. The functioning of multicultural teams in HSBC is explored looking at the leadership skills that must be possessed by bank managers and the cultural attributes that can affect teams’ sensitivity to leadership approaches. The methods of exploratory research are employed combining analysis of secondary data and primary data obtained from interviews with 10 multicultural leaders of HSBC. Conclusions are made about the importance of effective communication and managers’ cross-cultural awareness for the success of multicultural teams within HSBC.
