The dissertation investigates human resource practices used in the UK civil service organisation Land Registry (LR) focusing on the work life balance of their employees. Literature is reviewed on the theory of psychological contract, flexible working hours, the relationship between the employer and employee, the background of Land Registry, the working culture of civil service organisations, etc. The methodology is based on a case study approach using a combination of secondary and primary research. A study of upper level and middle level employees in LR London and Nottingham offices is conducted through a questionnaire to determine the relationship between flexible working and psychological contracts. Conclusions are made about the importance of mutual understanding of expectations in employer-employee relationship.
