The dissertation investigates the relationship between the exchange rates volatility and the returns of the banking industry over the period between 2002 and 2007 from three major currencies, i.e. USD, EUR, and GBP. The review of literature touches on the issues of the international finance, the macroeconomic perspective of currency fluctuations (CF), the CF effects on the banking industry, financial products used to avoid the risks caused by exchange rates volatility, etc. The research is based on the descriptive statistic analysis of the data on banks' profitability and currency prices collected from Bankscope database and FXHistory and considering two measures of return, i.e. the return on equity (ROE) and the return on assets (ROA). Conclusions are made about the factors behind the instability of the exchange rate in the economy.
