The dissertation investigates the contribution of the sub-prime mortgage crisis to the global economic and financial downturn. Literature is reviewed on the causes of the sub-prime crisis in the USA, the role of Asset Back Securities (ABS) and Collateralised Debt Obligations (CDO) used by banks as investment instruments, etc. The paper uses the methods of qualitative research together with the quantitative analysis of statistical data and regression models to test how the situation in the US housing market influences the UK economy. Conclusions are made about the impact of the US sub-prime crisis on the investment capacity of the UK companies and the exchange rate of the British pound. The use of econometric models is recommended for estimating the effects of the crisis on the economic slowdown in the UK.
