The dissertation looks at the causes and consequences of the global credit crunch evaluating the effect of the crisis on the UK banking sector with the focus on Northern Rock, HSBC, Barclays, Royal Bank of Scotland and Lloyds Banking Group. Literature is reviewed on the phenomena of economic business cycles and banking credit cycles, financial market fluctuations, origins of subprime mortgage crises, etc. The methods of the research include quantitative analysis of financial performance of UK largest banks over 2006-2008. Conclusions are made about the spread of the subprime mortgage crisis from the USA to the UK and the resulted performance of the UK banks.
