The dissertation investigates the banking system of Pakistan focusing on the profitability of the commercial banks. Information is provided on the country's financial policy and economic development, the evolution of the banking system, monetary policy, etc. The review of literature touches on the theoretical issues of the financial reform and liberalization, banking efficiency and profitability, capital regulation, etc. The research is based on the data obtained from various financial statements of Pakistani commercial banks over 2002 ? 2005.
