The privatisation process in Kazakhstan was one of significant events during the first years of independence and its importance for all economy is hard to overestimate. Privatisation create great opportunities both for investors to penetrate into new markets previously closed for public sector and for State with improving of budget by the sale of stake in companies. Also new owners of privatised companies in common carry out technical modernisation of equipment, adjust new managerial methods and improve financial condition of the company. This study uses a variation of economic value added to analyse the performance of Kazakhstan banking during the last stage of the mass privatisation for the period of 1998-2001. The different measures of cost of capital were used to compute value added and the results on it were also compared with more standard measures of performance such as ROA ad ROE. Value added was found to be mostly negative throughout the sample, though on average, three to four banks were able to add positive value. The findings also suggest that the performance of Kazakhstan banking is improving over time.
