The dissertation presents Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis of two automotive air filters, a standard pleated-paper filter, and a Pipercross conical-shaped foam filter. Experiments are conducted to determine the coefficients of permeabilty (?) and inertia (C2), the porous characteristics of the filters are compared, 3D geometrically accurate CFD simulations of both air filters are completed, differences between the static pressure drops and velocity magnitudes through the filters are identified. Literature is reviewed on the theory of porous media and air flows. The methods of conducting airflow and porosity experiments are described. Conclusions are made about the validity of CFD analysis and modelling suggesting recommendations for further research in the area.
