This dissertation aims to examine the extent to which storytelling at school and at home can promote literacy in the early years in Nigeria. The objectives are to examine the nature of oral traditions and the most effective methods to promote literacy from this cultural context, to evaluate the use of storytelling in early years in education and the pedagogical benefits both from literate and oral based societies, to identify the importance of effective literacy policies in Nigeria as a route to sustainable literacy growth, and to discuss if the use of storytelling can engage resistant communities and parents as a method to promote not only early years literacy, but also community literacy. The findings from the analysis are carried out, and before conclusions are made the paper detail the implications of the findings for educational management in Nigeria.
