This dissertation examines Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) and aims to assess the features and functions required or desired in a VLE by students. The objectives are to examine the features and functions of VLEs today, to examine the manner in which learning through VLEs takes place, to identify the advantages and disadvantages of the features and functions implemented in current VLEs, to identify potential improvements to the current forms of VLEs, to determine the particular features and functions that students find useful or attractive, to understand the requirements of a customisable teaching environment, and to design a prototype VLE suitable for enhancing learning for English Literature students. The review of literature focuses on a range of topics, some of which include the Behaviourist school of learning, the VLE Advantages and Disadvantages, and the Cognitive school of learning. The methodology is then provided, which details the research methods chosen, this is then followed by the results and finding sections. The study then focuses on the development of a prototype for students, this section is carried out in great detail.
