This dissertation focuses on the economic growth of Kazakhstan in relation to the developments in the financial sector. The dissertation uses figures ranging from 1991 to 2009. The study begins by providing background information, and aims to discuss the links between development of the banking sector and economic growth of a country, to compare the development of the banking sector in Kazakhstan with the banking industries in related post-Soviet countries, and to make recommendations regarding what must be improved in the banking sector of the country in order to achieve faster economic growth. The review of literature examines the development of the banking sector in relation to economic growth and external debt. The banking development is also evaluated in reference to the global credit crunch. The methodology is then presented and outlines the approach that will be taken, along with the methods and limitations of the study. The findings from the research are detailed, and the paper performs a correlation and regression analysis, whilst looking at the causality, exogeneity, and liquidity indicators.
