The dissertation examines the economy of Kazakhstan during 2000-2008 seeking to identify to what extent small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) can improve the economic growth of the country in the time of the world financial crisis. Literature is reviewed on the definitions of SME, the role of SME in the Asian financial crisis of 1997, the government policies towards SME, the current situation with SME in Kazakhstan, etc. The research uses econometric regression analysis of economic indicators and macroeconomic variables covering the examined time period. Conclusions are made about the role of SME in the present-day Kazakhstan economy and its dependence on the turnover of SMEs, the number of SMEs and the number of people employed in SMEs. It is argued whether SME can be considered among the factors that contribute to the growth of Kazakhstan during global economic recession.
