The dissertation examines the impact of Evangelical religion on popular leisure patterns in Scotland over the second half of the nineteenth century related to alcohol consumption, Sunday recreation and animal sports. Literature is reviewed on the economic, social, cultural and religious life in Scotland over 1850-1900 drawing comparisons with England, examining family demographics, church attendance statistics, relationship between humans and animals including laws against animal cruelty and RSPCA activities, drinking problems and the Temperance movement, etc. Conclusions are made about the paramount role of Evangelical religion in Scotland that changed cultural and recreational patterns of the country and largely contributed to the nation's identity.
