C/C/182. One of the modelling techniques used to represent knowledge particularly for heterogeneous distributed applications is ontology. Explore and explain what this modelling approach is, and its advantage compared with relational data model and object oriented models, i.e. what does it offer to make the model semantically richer than other models provide.

The paper looks at ontology, or specifications of what exists, as a method of quantifying and representing knowledge. Methodological use of anthologies is described and compared to other models of knowledge representation, i.e. relational and object oriented data models. The use of ontology in specifying conceptualisations of the environment is discussed using the example of ‘smart home’.
