The paper looks at the link between the aesthetic and design concepts of functionalism in architecture discussing the statement by Louis Sullivan: “Form ever follows function” and arguing whether functionalism was merely the removal of ornamentation and a departure from earlier concepts of aesthetics. Contributions to functionalism made by Le Corbusier and van der Rohe are examined, their architectural works are analysed.
