The dissertation looks at the features of the present global crisis comparing its effects to those of the previous economic recessions and examining the possible impact of low performing steel industry on the performance of the Russian economy using the case study of Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MKK), one of the key Russian steel manufacturers. The review of literature touches on the relationship between industry performance and regional development focusing on the effects of the industry downturn on the economic development of the country. PEST and SWOT analysis of the Russian steel industry is conducted. The methods of the research are based on secondary data sources. Conclusions are made about the implications of the steel industry shocks for the economy of Russia and the operations efficiency of Russian steelmakers.
