The dissertation addresses the business and ethical issues faced by Royal Dutch Shell (Shell) and other oil and gas companies examining their management of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Literature is reviewed on the history of the company, the theory of CSR, the difficulties of operating in the oil and gas industry, etc. A study is conducted to compare CSR components practices in seven oil and gas corporations, i.e. Shell. BP, ExxonMobil, Chevron, Total, Gazprom and Petrochina using secondary research data. Shell's CSR policies are evaluated against those of their competitors in the industry. Conclusions are made as to whether the company is meeting CSR criteria.
