This dissertation examines the role of pressure groups in addressing the unsustainable impact of oil exploration in the Niger Delta. The dissertation begins by providing the background to the study and its aims, which are to evaluate why the Nigerian legislative system does not force oil companies to address environmental protection and the concerns of local communities, to evaluate whether it is possible that a right to environmental quality can be instituted into Nigeria, to evaluate why or whether the policies of the companies have changed dramatically, whether it is because of the activities of the pressure groups, to examine why communication between the government, judiciary and oil companies and pressure group have been poor leading to polarisation of attitudes, and to determine why the blame is being contested between the local communities “hacking” of resources and the companies’ lack of corporate social responsibility and proffer a solution of how it can be resolved. The study provides an overview of the literature, and this is followed by a thematic review. This review discusses topics like sustainable oil production, corporate social responsibility, the development of an international environmental ethic, and legal cases. Data is collected through interviews, and the dissertation concludes with recommendations.
