The dissertation investigates the impacts of oil extraction and processing on the sea environments of Nigeria and the UK addressing the issues of vandalism, negligence and incompetence in oil pipelines management that have resulted in oil spills and inflicted severe damage to the delta of Niger and to the North Sea. The review of literature touches on the environmental impacts of the oil industry, the threats of oil spills, the environmental concerns in Nigeria and the UK, the regulatory framework of the UK oil industry, etc. The methods of the research are based on the grounded theory and a case study approach that includes primary research conducted through open-ended questionnaires. Conclusions are made about the causes of the oil spills, their environmental and social impacts, and the activities of domestic and international organisations that could prevent pollution and ensure post-contamination rehabilitation.
