WORDS:

DATE:

PRICE:

The paper looks at the idea of new venture creation – with reference to the phenomenon of the UK’s weekly Big Issue magazine, a journal sold by and for homeless people. A company overview is provided which describes the magazine as one of the country’s leading social enterprises – its purpose being to provide an opportunity for the homeless to earn a legitimate income. The Big Issue describes itself as a business solution to a social problem. The paper examines theories of organisational growth, such as Greitner’s (1972) model which has gained widespread recognition across strategy, marketing and entrepreneurship. The model is based on the idea of the organisation as a living organism, with five growth phases in which the business can expand with its resource base and structure intact. In terms of explaining new venture growth, the research presents the teleology model emphasising the role of the entrepreneur’s vision in shaping the venture’s future.
