The dissertation looks at the current crisis in the music industry connected with the emergence of illegal internet downloads. Literature is reviewed on the changes and transformations in the industry that have occurred in the past several years showing how the developments in technology and the use of the Internet led to emergence of file-sharing software and peer-to-peer websites that pose a major threat to the music industry. It is argued that with the spread of illegal downloads record companies need to develop new marketing and business strategies. The methods of the research include secondary and primary data obtained from a questionnaire. Conclusions are made about the marketing strategies that can be adopted by record companies to resist Internet piracy.
