This paper examines the music industry, aiming to evaluate the impact of digital distribution on the strategies of the industry. The paper has five objectives, to Identify the issues surrounding the digital distribution of music, to assess the impact of technological innovation upon the music industry, to Identify how the Internet has changed business and commerce, to determine relevant business models suited to the music industry, and to evaluate the music industry's approach to digital distribution. These objectives are achieved through use of secondary literature and academic theory. The paper discusses traditional business models for the music industry, as well E-commerce models and models for the digital distribution of music. The rise of the mp3 player is discussed, as is the structural changes occurring in the industry. The way the internet and digital distribution affects major record labels is also evaluated. Conclusions are made regarding the success of the project and future recommendations for the industry.
