The dissertation investigates the effects of the global recession on the automotive industry addressing the issues of operations management faced by General Motors (GM) and Toyota. The methods of the research employ secondary data and primary data collected via semi-structured interviews with GM and Toyota employees, analysis of the companies’ operations and performance is conducted using the models of PEST and Porter’s Five Forces. Conclusions are made about the need to improve the core competencies of both companies. Recommendations are suggested to GM and Toyota management about the available options for their strategic development.

Conclusions are made that the country of origin can develop a positive perception towards the automobile brand, but that it has a minimal impact on the buying decision of Turkish customers.
