The paper reports on the European aviation industry using Porter’s Five Forces model to analyse the competitive context of the industry. The challenges facing European air carriers are identified including volatile prices of oil, price sensitive buying behaviour of consumers, green issues, high bargaining power of suppliers, and threats of new product and service substitutes. The ‘open skies’ EU policy is discussed arguing that it leads to greater competitiveness and shrinkage in the market share of each airline.
