The dissertation investigates the effects of the global recession on the automotive industry addressing the issues of operations management faced by General Motors (GM) and Toyota. The review of literature touches on the current competitive strategies used by the leading automotive players, the impacts of the global crisis on the automotive industry, the implications of the recession, strategic options available for global automotive companies in their supply chain management and strategic alliances, etc. A case study of strategies used by General Motors (GM) and Toyota is conducted. The methods of the research employ secondary data and primary data collected via semi-structured interviews with GM and Toyota employees, analysis of the companies’ operations and performance is conducted using the models of PEST and Porter’s Five Forces. Conclusions are made about the need to improve the core competencies of both companies. Recommendations are suggested to GM and Toyota management about the available options for their strategic development.

Conclusions are made about the challenges of LT for SME that involve operational risks.
