The paper looks at strategic management within the UK grocery industry providing a review of literature on the background of the leading grocery retailers, and examining how the principles of resource based view (RBV) and dynamic capability approach (DCA) are applied by Tesco and by an anonymous discounter XXX in their strategic management under recession. The methods of the research include primary data obtained from the semi-structured interviews with the store management. The ethical issues of the study are addressed. Conclusions are made about the strategic response of Tesco and XXX to the current financial crisis.
