Since 1998, Scottish and Newcastle (S&N plc) has adapted significantly different strategies to cope with a hostile takeover, government legislation and changing home market conditions and international opportunity. This paper will attempt to identify the strategies implemented by S&N plc and evaluate how successful they have been. I have split this assignment into 3 clear sections. Firstly, I will be dealing with the hostile Elders bid. Then I will be analysing the effect the Beer Orders had on S&Ns strategy. Finally, I will be looking at S&Ns current strategy and whether or not it is proving to be effective. I have aimed to use the most contemporary and relevant sources available. I have sourced a copy of the 2005 S&N interim annual report, as well as marketing reports from 2003, 2004 and 2005. I have sourced up to date articles from The Economist, The Financial Times, The Scotsman and BBC News. Using these sources, as well as financial data, I am looking to give an accurate up to date report on S&Ns current strategy and its effectiveness.
