This paper examines career development and career management, and is split into four sections. The first section outlines the theory behind career development, and highlights different theoretical implications. The second section is based upon primary data collected through interviews with three people working in different environmental settings. These results have been used to contrast how career goals and career development steps fit in with models and concepts discussed in the previous section. The third section recommends ways in which organizations can help to support career development. The paper does this by looking at J. Sainsbury, The Carphone Warehouse, Deloitte, and British Petroleum (BP). The final section looks at three changes that have taken place in the world of work and how this may have affected careers.
