The dissertation investigates the use of stress tests in banking as a tool to monitor and avoid disastrous effects of economic shocks. The review of literature touches on the issues of risk and uncertainty in the banking industry, the nature of stress tests, the variables used in stress tests in the financial system, etc. A case study of five major British banks is conducted including HSBC, Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), Barclays Bank, BNP Paribas and Lloyds TSB, to examine procedures and outcomes of stress testing. Conclusions are made about the impacts of stress tests on the banks’ performance and their implications for the UK financial system.
