The review of literature touches on the history and background of charity shops in the UK, strategic changes in the charity retail sector, the functions and purpose of CS, their sales promotion and marketing techniques, development of partnerships between CS and commercial retailers, etc. The methodology of the dissertation is based on secondary research and a case study of strategic changes at two UK charity shops, Oxfam and Sue Ryder Care comparing their practices with those of two high street retailers, Primark and TK Maxx. Conclusions are made about the effectiveness of the strategies pursued by charities and their influence on commercial retailers.
