The dissertation examines the impact of the global recession on the shipping industry. Literature is reviewed on the background of modern shipping industry, global economic developments over 2007-2009, the cancellation of the European shipping conferences, etc. The methodology of the research is based on the interpretivist approach to the case study of financial troubles in Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) comparing their performance to that of Maersk Line. Conclusions are made about the effects of the crisis on the competition within the industry and the related actions of the European Union (EU).
