The dissertation examines the role of performance management (PM) and employee performance appraisal (PA) in contemporary organisations, and in Lloyds Bank and TBS Group in particular. Literature is reviewed on the background of the company and the theory of HRM touching on PA history, purpose and effectiveness, PM function in organisation, the methods of measuring employee performance, the links between PA and staff development, the influence of reward on organisational performance, etc. The methods of the research are based on secondary data including a case study of performance management and appraisal in Lloyds TSB. Conclusions are made about the effectiveness of the reward system used in Lloyds TSB and the benefits of training employees to perform at the needed level.
